Figure 3
Comparison of Two Pelvis Types

Both does were NPGA champions and first kidded
at 2 years and 5 months of age.

Iota - Easy Kidder
Longer, wider pelvic inlet
Both halves symmetrical
Thinner bone due to nursing 13 kids
Pelvic opening has good length, width and shape for delivery.
Required minor delivery assistance with two triplet litters.

Alice - Difficult Kidder
Shorter, narrower, twisted (see below)
Thick, round bone due to poor production
One very difficult kidding - did not breed her again
Pelvic inlet is much smaller due to pelvic distortion.

Dotted lines at the tops of the pelvic inlets represent  where muscle and tissue define to the top of the birth canal.

Figure 4
Alice's Deformed Pelvis

It was clear that Alice's pelvis (right) was deformed when I set her pelvic bone on a flat surface and could rock it back and forth.

The right side of her pelvis rotates toward the left and slightly up toward the hip to narrow the pelvic opening.. This slight deformity cannot be felt in the living goat but may be noticeable in the stance of the rear legs. lack of symmetry of straightness of both hind legs.

Alice stood correctly on her left hind leg. The pelvic deformity tilted her right leg forward, causing her right stifle (knee) to angle out and the right hock to angle slightly in. Her rear legs could be set perfectly square for showing, but it was noticeable as she walked or stood normally on her own.
